Case History: Urban Genius: the new integrated urban data platform for the city of Bari

Modern city management requires tools capable of integrating heterogeneous data from different sources into a single platform: mobility, environment, risks, infrastructure, quality of life. Through the “Casa delle Tecnologie Emergenti – Bari Open Innovation Hub (CTE BARI)”project, the Municipality of Bari has embarked on a path of innovation aimed at the digital transformation of the territory, with the goal of improving urban monitoring and supporting data-driven strategic decisions.

This is the context in which TIM Urban Geniuswas created, the new integrated platform for urban data management, developed by TIM Enterprise and officially presented on December 10 at Porta Futuro Bari.

The challenge

To make TIM Urban Genius a truly comprehensive and advanced tool, it was necessary to:

integrate new data acquisition methods, including those derived from aerial monitoring via drones;
standardize information flows and standards already present in other municipal platforms;
Ensure intuitive and centralized consultation of urban data through a single interface for administrators, technicians, and smart city operators.

Exprivia solution

Exprivia, a long-standing partner for digital innovation in the city of Bari, has actively participated in the evolutionary development of the integrated platform, introducing three key elements.

Integration of data from drone monitoring (acquisition, processing, and visualization).
Continuity and unification through integration with COP (City Operations Platform).
Enhancement of the ecosystem with open components and APIs for new services.

1) Integration of data from drone monitoring

Exprivia has designed and developed new features dedicated to the acquisition, processing, and visualization of data collected through drone flights, a strategic component for:

fire prevention and monitoring;
infrastructure status control;
future integration of advanced IoT sensors on buildings and green areas.

These features allow videos, images, and telemetric data to be combined with other urban information on the platform.

The Urban Genius platform has also been integrated with the previous COP (City Operations Platform) system, developed by Exprivia for the Municipality of Bari: today, the municipal administration works from a single interface, with simpler, more consistent, and centralized data management.

2) Enhancement of the digital urban ecosystem

Thanks to the platform's open structure, Exprivia has contributed to defining the components that enable universities, startups, and businesses to:

connect new systems;
develop vertical digital services;
use urban data via dedicated APIs.

This is a fundamental step toward a true ecosystem of urban innovation.

Results

Thanks to Exprivia's contribution, TIM Urban Genius now offers:

an integrated and up-to-date view of mobility, the environment, weather forecasts, and risks;
advanced maps based on satellite data (Sentinel), ARPA/ISPRA networks, and video analysis;
the ability to correlate traditional data and drone data in a single dashboard;
operational tools for civil protection, municipal administration, researchers, and local stakeholders;
a platform that is open to future developments, scalable, and based on open standard technologies.

With TIM Urban Genius, Bari is taking a significant step towards becoming a data-driven city, equipping itself with a modern, modular tool designed to support medium- to long-term urban strategies.
