Professional roles
He was a Director of the Board of Directors of Finmeccanica Spa from 2002 until
May 2011 and was Vice Chairman.
He was Chairman of the Board of Directors of SACE Spa from October 2009 to
June 2016.
He was Chairman of Ispramed from 2010 to 2016
He was also Chairman of the Board of Directors of Torre SGR from October 2013 to
July 2018.
He was Chairman of the Board of Directors of Italfondiario from December 2013 to
March 2017.
He was Chairman of the Board of Directors of MilanoSesto from March 2014 to
September 2018.
From 2011 to September 2016 he was Senior Advisor of Fortress Investment Group.

Diplomatic roles
From 2001 to 2005 he was Diplomatic Advisor to the Italian Prime Minister
and his Personal Representative (Sherpa) for the G8 Summit (Amato and
Berlusconi governments).
From 2005 to 2009 he was Italian Ambassador to the United States of America, with
accreditation also for the Bahamas Islands, and Italy's Permanent Observer
of the Organisation of the American States.
He was Italian Ambassador to Australia from 1998 to 2001, with accreditation also
for the Islands of Fiji, Papua New Guinea, the Republic of Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands,
the Republic of Nauru and the Federal States of Micronesia.
From 1995 to 1997, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he was head of the Office for Coordination
of Italian Regions' International Activity and later Coordinator of the Programme
for Reconstruction in Albania.
He was Italian Ambassador to Iran from 1992 to 1995.
In Rome, from 1989 to 1992, he was Diplomatic Advisor to the Minister for Finance and
later Chief of Press and Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
From 1985 to 1989 in Geneva he was Italy's Vice Permanent Representative to the
Offices of the United Nations and other International Organisations.
From 1984 to 1985 he was appointed to the Italian Prime Minister's Office with
special responsibilities.
He was Chief Advisor for the Press and Information from 1981 to 1984 at
the Italian Embassy in Paris.
From 1977 to 1981 he was appointed to the General Office of the Ministry for Foreign
Affairs.
Previously, he filled various diplomatic roles in Somalia, France and Portugal and
worked at the FAO in Rome and at the European Commission in Brussels.

Social and voluntary roles
He is Chairman of the National Association of the Grand Cross.
He is Chairman of Diplomatia.
He is Honorary Chairman of the Italian Committee for the World Food Programme (WFP).
He is Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees of St. George’s School in Rome.
He is the Founding Member of the Nuovo Circolo degli Scacchi club in Rome.

Think Tank and academic activities
He is an Associate Member of the ICSA (Intelligence Culture and Strategic Analysis) Foundation,
of the dell’Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI - International Affairs Institute), of the Istituto per gli Studi di Politica Internazionale
(ISPI - Italian Institute for International Politica Studies) and at “The European House” Ambrosetti.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              He conducts courses in International Politics at private universities.

Education, training and honours
He graduated from the faculty of Law of La Sapienza University in Rome. He
attended specialist courses in International Law and Economics in Belgium,
Luxembourg and the United Kingdom and worked as a lawyer at a law firm in Rome.
He was conferred with the honour of Knight of the Grand Cross of the Italian Republic and
of many other countries, including Officier de la Legion d'Honneur of the
French Republic.
He regularly works in collaboration with several national newspapers with contributions on
international politics and he is the author of various essays including “Obama e l’ombra cinese”
(2010, Edizione Guida) and “In prima fila, quale posto per l’Italia nel modo” (2019, Guerini
Editore).
