Exprivia experience in space technologies fuelled a fruitful technology transfer toward the maritime sector. R&D projects in this field started in 2007 with the objective of merging heterogeneous data from on-board sensors and integrating them in a 3D dashboard. Exprivia then developed several operational solutions, which now support situational awareness, traffic monitoring and route optimisation for private and institutional users. Research activities go on, in order to keep Exprivia maritime solutions at the leading edge of technology.

Here follows the description of the main Exprivia solutions in the maritime domain.

IMDatE
Exprivia developed the IMDatE system for EMSA, the European Maritime Safety Agency. The system integrates data from AIS, Satellite-AIS, LRIT, VMS, coastal radar and Earth Observation data, offering web-based monitoring services to different categories of end users both in and outside Europe.

In this project Exprivia exploited its experience in ingesting and processing huge quantities of real-time data (data from ships and Earth Observation images). IMDatE gave Exprivia the possibility to experiment the latest generation of Oracle products, aimed at finding hidden correlations in dynamic archives of heterogeneous data. Exprivia mastery of these revolutionary ICT technologies open the door to applications in many other fields in which the Big Data paradigm enables valuable business opportunities.

IMDatE summary:
  • IMDatE is a complex system developed in cooperation with CLS to address Maritime Safety and Security business;
  • the system incorporates all existing maritime data types and sources into a 3D Web Platform;
  • a dedicated configurable surveillance engine allows automatic detection of any suspicious behaviour and sending notifications to interested users;
  • a strong and complex security module allows protecting data from unauthorised access and tailoring data visibility;

CleanSeaNet

CleanSeaNet is the European satellite-based oil and vessels detection operational service, provides routine monitoring of all European waters, supporting the identification of the polluters by combining information from SAR images and Vessels traffic information available through SafeSeaNet, linked into national/regional response chains, thus strengthening the surveillance and response capacity to deliberate and accidental spills.

Current Stakeholders
  • satellite images in full resolution;
  • oil spill detection (shapefiles) and alert reports: 30 minutes; immediate reporting of ongoing spills for catching polluter ‘red handed’;
  • possible polluter’s identification: AIS information via EMSA SafeSeaNet service;
  • Electronic Nautical Charts;
  • Ancillary data:
    • Meteorological wind and wave data,
    • SAR derived wind and swell data.
Service chain for oil spill analysis.
  • Service Providers (SP) Operators, supported by SW tools, manually inspect the images in NRT;
  • use of AIS data, wind and sea information and another ancillary information like bathymetry, platforms and wrecks layers;
  • correction of position deviation;
  • analysis of the image, characterizing the spills: position, shape, (polygon), area, length;
  • setting of the confidence level of detection: Class A (higher Confidence) or Class B (lower confidence);
  • identification of possible polluters.
