The market of mobile VoIP applications is crowded with scores of VOIP clients. Extravox distinguishes itself from these for its capacity to break the Mobile VoIP paradigm down into technical features that, when appropriately combined and integrated, give rise to business benefits.

Extravox exploits the Mobile VoIP paradigm to create revenue and limit the costs in challenging operating scenarios, such as:

  • WiFi offload
  • Indoor mobile service coverage
  • Fixed-mobile convergence
  • Roaming & International charges cut-down
  • DECT replacement

Since it was set up in 2006 on the OS Nokia Symbian mobile phone, Extravox has evolved and industrialized to the most recent Android and Apple platforms, always following the guidelines of success to guarantee its large-scale adoption both by consumers and by business users: experience and operating performance, integration with voice on traditional mobile network services and end-to-end management of the mobile VoIP service.

Extravox guarantees an improved user experience transparent to the user. It is integrated with the native smartphone user interface and guarantees high performance in terms of voice quality, response fluidity and rapidity, optimized management of hardware resources, such as CPU, battery and radio.

The provisioning system based on the Exprivia Mobile Orchestration solution offers a high degree of personalization and integration flexibility, fully adaptable to the customer's single needs and industrializable, and the possibility of implementing an administration workflow, intermediating its complexity and making it easy for the end user to access it and activate it for the first time.

User Experience

Autostart
Extravox is registered automatically as soon as the terminal enters an area covered by WiFi. This event is signalled by a change in colour of the icons on the notification bar and splash-screen of the app. If the quality of the WiFi cover drops below a configurable threshold, Extravox is deregistered automatically. The app can be disabled from the splash-screen by clicking on the "Menu" hard key on the terminal. The app is re-enabled by clicking on "Extravox" in "In progress".

Call
A call is made using the standard native interface of the smartphone: the user has five seconds to select VoIP or SIM before making the call. After this time, the default setting is a VoIP call (Extravox). This feature (default routing) can be set in the provisioning phase to different options (GSM/VoIP preferred, always VoIP, always GSM or call routing rules). Extravox supports advanced Voice Call Continuity algorithms. In fact, the solution can detect when the smartphone is leaving the WiFi coverage and, when this happens, triggers a call handover process to a GSM/3G/4G mobile phone network without any interruption or action being taken by the user. The inverse process is also supported.

Call in progress
The audio volume can be regulated by clicking on the "Media audio level" hard key on the terminal. The screen graphics can be personalized and the call functions are accessible from the "Call in progress" screen. Clicking on the hard key menu of the terminal gives access to the audio menu for regulating the volume of the microphone and the earphone.

The advantages of the solution

The use of the Extravox solution has many advantages. The most important one is fixed-mobile convergence, as the mobile phone becomes an extension of a company IP-PBX network when covered by WiFi. In addition, two numbers can be managed with one mobile device, as the users can always be reached by mobile VoIP both on their fixed extension and on their mobile number. It also ensures a saving on international mobile VoIP calls, as, with Extravox, the international mobile call becomes an international fixed call. Another positive element is the continuity of the telephone service when WiFi cover is no longer available.
